You seem to have bad luck with physical media. Apple says those with Intel Macs running Tiger (OS X 10.4) must buy the 169 Mac Box Set, which includes a full version of Snow Leopard bundled with the latest versions of iLife and iWork. I have an upgrade copy of Snow Leopard on DVD. Never done it but the author claims he has, and it worked for him. You can try to repair the disc using this method. 
I have a copy of Leopard that came with the MacBook.
